"Why did Le Pen refer to Macron having offshore bank accounts?"
Towards the end of yesterday's French presidential election debate, Le Pen said to Macron, "I hope we won't learn that you have an offshore bank account in the Bahamas."1
This prompted some reporters to ask, "Why did Le Pen refer to Macron having offshore bank accounts?"2
On their live feed of the debate, The Guardian3 commented:
"Marine Le Pen came very close to defamation during that little exchange, suggesting Macron may have offshore bank accounts."
For the benefit of anyone who is out of the loop, Le Pen was referring to a story published by Disobedient Media4 regarding documents leaked on the /pol/ forum.
The Disobedient Media article begins:
"Documents leaked online today appear to show that French Presidential Candidate Emmanuel Macron entered into an operating agreement for a Limited Liability Company (LLC) in the Caribbean island of Nevis, and that the company may have had a business relationship with a bank which has been previously involved in tax evasion cases in the Cayman Islands. Macron claimed he was not concealing assets or holding secret offshore accounts less than a month ago."
The Disobedient Media article includes links to pdfs of the documents, so that readers can view the documents for themselves.
The documents have not been investigated as yet, and are therefore unverified, but according to FoxNews.com5, Macron's camp said the former investment banker was the victim of a "cyber misinformation campaign," and added that they could take legal action.
When Le Pen was asked on BFM TV whether she was formally accusing Macron of having a secret offshore account, Le Pen replied, "Not at all. If I wanted to do so I would have done it yesterday. I've just asked him the question. If I had proof, I would have claimed it yesterday."
Very soon after the documents were posted, users on social media sites and online forums began discussing the story, and a seemingly co-ordinated push of some familiar and oft-repeated narratives was immediately apparent.
However, once again, the documents have not been verified, and the French authorities have so far not issued any statement on the authenticity of the documents.
The French election run-off between Le Pen and Macron takes place on Sunday.
