Obama prosecuted more whistle blowers than all previous presidents combined.
In his recent TV ad1, President Trump mentioned that 'America is becoming more energy independent'. This was a reference to the executive order signed on March 28th on promoting energy independence and economic growth.2
One other executive order recently signed by President Trump which didn't get much press coverage was the Presidential Executive Order on Improving Accountability and Whistleblower Protection at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
President Trump visited the VA offices and thanked veterans for their service while signing the executive order, and said:
“I’m honored also to be at the Department of Veterans Affairs because I will tell you this has been something right from the beginning of the campaign that does not get any more important for me than making life really great for our phenomenal veterans, that I can say.”
He added:
“This executive order makes it clear that we will never ever tolerate substandard care for our great veterans.”
This executive order in support of whistle blowers signed by President Trump contrasts strongly with Obama who had the worst record on whistle blowers of all US presidents.
As The Guardian reported:
"On (Obama's) watch, there have been eight prosecutions under the 1917 Espionage Act – more than double those under all previous presidents combined."3
Homeland Security and Human Rights Director Jesselyn Radack said of Obama's record:
“Obama … has brought more prosecutions against whistle blowers under the Espionage Act than any previous president and all presidents combined.”4
And in terms of jail time, Obama has sentenced whistle blowers to 25 times the jail time of all prior US presidents combined.5
Trump's executive order only relates to whistle blowers within the VA, but it's nevertheless a good start and a step in the right direction. And after the way Obama's administration targeted whistle blowers who exposed waste and fraud for prosecution6, it's reassuring to see President Trump take the opposite stance and take steps towards giving whistle blowers the protection they deserve.
