Walls work: The statistics from the Hungarian border wall prove it emphatically.
During her visit to Mexico, German chancellor Angela Merkel made the claim, "Putting up walls and cutting oneself off will not solve the problem." This is a message which alt-left media outlets have repeated, with Michael Dear of the Huffington Post claiming, "The wall will not work."1
So let's look at Hungary, and examine the effect the Hungarian border wall had on illegal immigration to see how these claims by Merkel and Huff Post hold up.
The Hungarian border wall with Croatia was completed on 16 October 2015. These are the illegal immigration figures2 for the three months prior to the Hungarian wall being built:
Aug 15 = 57,938
Sep 15 = 138,396
Oct 15 = 99,497
A total of 295,831 cases of illegal immigration in three months.
And these are the figures for illegal immigration in the three full calendar months after the Hungarian border wall was built:
Nov 2015 = 315
Dec 2015 = 270
Jan 2016 = 553
A total of 1,138 cases of illegal immigration in three months.
Here are those figures once again:
Pre-wall illegal immigration = 295,831
Post-wall illegal immigration = 1,138
As you can see, as a consequence of the Hungarian border wall, illegal immigration dropped to a tiny fraction of the levels seen previously. To be precise, illegal immigration dropped to 0.38% of the levels it had been at prior to the wall.
As a reminder, President Trump’s immigration enforcement has helped slow illegal border crossings by 76% since Trump was elected.3 President Trump knows what works. He has a record of success.
The success of the Hungarian border wall shows that walls work, and they work emphatically. The figures speak for themselves.
