Hollywood stars stayed silent over Weinstein. Only spoke out once he was fired.
Four days after the New York Times published its article detailing decades of sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood stars have finally began to speak out against Weinstein.
Meryl Streep, who once gave a standing ovation to convicted child rapist Roman Polanski, and who back at the 2012 Golden Globes called Weinstein 'God', called his behavior 'inexcusable'.
Mark Ruffalo called Weinstein 'disgusting'. Kate Winslet called him 'reprehensible'. Judy Dench called his actions 'horrifying'. Amber Tamblyn called on Weinstein to release his victims from non-disclosure agreements so that they can tell their stories.
But all of these stars only spoke out after Weinstein had been fired.
This is the timeline of recent events:
October 5th - The New York Times publishes article revealing decades of sexual misconduct by Harvey Weinstein, including sexual harassment and unwanted physical contact.1
October 5th-7th - Silence from Hollywood
October 8th - Harvey Weinstein fired by the Weinstein Company.
October 9th - Hollywood stars finally begin speaking out against Harvey Weinstein.
The fact that stars only began to speak out once Weinstein had been fired reveals a lot about their priorities. While there remained a risk to their careers, they all kept quiet.
It's clear that the hypocrites of Hollywood value their earnings potential more than they value their integrity. This culture of silence is what has allowed the Hollywood 'casting couch' culture of sexual abuse to thrive for decades, but hopefully with the New York Times report, the dominoes are finally starting to fall.

1 Here are a few quotes from the New York Times article:
"In interviews, eight women described varying behavior by Mr. Weinstein: appearing nearly or fully naked in front of them, requiring them to be present while he bathed or repeatedly asking for a massage or initiating one himself."
"Mr. Weinstein has reached at least eight settlements with women, according to two company officials speaking on the condition of anonymity."
"Dozens of Mr. Weinstein’s former and current employees, from assistants to top executives, said they knew of inappropriate conduct while they worked for him."

ReplyDeleteNo, they're totally devoid of any integrity whatsoever.
